5 Tips When Relocating Your Business

Posted on

If high rent, bad location, or other factors are making you want to move your business, don't hesitate another moment. While moving can be a headache, there are steps you can take to make it much easier on you, your employees, and your customers. Check out these five tips you should follow when relocating your business.

Develop a Plan for the Move

Making a plan for your move is the first step because it is the best way to ensure you stay on schedule. Your plan should include everything important for the move, such as estimated price, who moves what items, etc. One of the biggest decisions you must make when crafting this plan is how long the move will take. If you are a small business and only moving a few miles away, it may only take a weekend to move. However, for larger companies, or if you are moving your business to a new state, you may find you have to shut down the business for the move.

Organize All the Items to Move

You may decide to pack and move all the items yourself, or you may hire professional packers and movers. However, whichever you choose, you need to organize all the items. Pack all items for specific areas and mark the boxes accordingly, so the movers know where they go. If there are some items you don't want the movers to handle because they are proprietary or confidential, make sure to have those set aside, so they aren't accidentally taken. Last, keep away any items that can't be moved by movers, such as hazardous items and perishable foods.

Be Transparent About the Move

Announcing you are moving your business to employees and customers can be overwhelming. You don't know who might get upset. While you can't prevent people from getting annoyed, you can make the move as smooth as possible by letting everyone know early, including employees, customers, vendors and anyone else with whom you do business. This gives everyone plenty of time to decide if they can continue to work with you or if a new plan is needed. This ensures even people who aren't happy about the move have plenty of time to adjust.

Hire New Staff If Necessary

If you are moving your business particularly far away like to a new state, some of your employees may not be able to go with you. While the higher up employees may want to move with the company to keep their career, employees who make little money probably won't move with you. You'll need to hire new employees to take their place. You'll also need to decide how you want to start the new employees. Do you want to have them hired and trained before the move, or can you wait until your business is moved and settled before you hire someone new?

Determine If You Need to Make Legal Changes

Depending on to where you are moving, you may need to make some legal changes. Particularly, if you are relocating to a new state, you'll need to re-register your business with the new state, depending on the type of business it is. Even if you're just moving to a new city, you may need to learn new laws and regulations, so you don't break any laws or rules.

Moving your business may be necessary, but it doesn't have to be a hassle. These five tips are excellent ways you can ensure your move is easy and smooth. For more information regarding moving and relocation, contact movers like Redondo Van & Storage in your area to get a quote.
